From My Hands to Her Heart
Every Christmas, I make something by hand for my kids. It’s become one of those quiet little traditions that I hold onto - a way of giving them something that carries a piece of me. Among the shiny wrapped gifts under the tree, there’s always one soft, handmade package that means just a little more. Something made slowly, with care, and plenty of love tucked between the stitches.
Over the years, those gifts have changed as they’ve grown up - tiny mittens, chunky scarves, slippers, blankets… you name it. Each one has its own story, a little snapshot of who they were that year and who I was when I made it.
Last Christmas, though, my daughter told me she didn’t want anything handmade. She said it gently, but still, it hit me right in the heart. I knew she didn’t mean it harshly - she’s growing up, and that happens - but it felt strange to let go of a tradition that’s always meant so much to me.
So instead of getting lost in that feeling, I tried something a bit different. I made her a small photo album filled with moments from the last six years - our family, her friends, and all the pets we’ve loved along the way. And with it, I gave her a simple frame so she could choose one favorite picture to keep out.
When she opened it, she smiled that quiet kind of smile that doesn’t need words. Later, she framed a photo of the two of us standing in front of a big heart we found one summer. I’ll never forget that moment. It reminded me that a thoughtful gift - whether it’s made or curated - always speaks the loudest.
The Idea for the Hat
At the end of January, she came to me and said, “Mama, can you make me a hat?”
Oh, my heart - I was so happy in that moment, and I think I actually felt the yarn in my stash jump for joy.
Right then, I knew the hat had to be something truly special – soft and simple, with just a little extra charm that made it completely hers. I wanted her to look at it and feel proud, almost like a princess. More than anything, I hoped this hat would win her heart back to handmade.
And that’s how The Blushbow Beanie was born. I could already see it in my head: cozy and warm, with the sweetest bow detail - delicate and light, not too fancy or heavy.
For the hat, I used firm single crochet stitches so it keeps its shape and can support the bow, while still feeling snuggly and not stiff. For the bow, I switched to a lighter ‘blow’ yarn in half double crochet in a soft blush-pink. The texture turned out lovely – soft, airy, and with just enough contrast to make the bow really pop. The hat is crocheted with Drops Cotton Merino, while the bow is worked in CONCEPT Cotton-Merino (DK) for a soft, slightly lighter look.
The hat itself worked up pretty quickly - I needed about six hours - but the bow took a bit of trial and error. I didn’t want it to be too big or too stiff. My first try in single crochet made the bow way too firm, and with double crochet it turned out far too large, so I finally settled on half double crochet. I had planned to take photos for the blog, but I was so focused on getting it just right that I completely forgot. I remember smiling as it finally came together on my hook; it looked exactly how I’d pictured it - maybe even a little better.
A Moment That Melted My Heart
When I handed her the hat, she ran her fingers over the bow, giggled a little, and put it on immediately. Then she looked up and said, “Mama, I’m sorry I ever said I didn’t want something handmade again.”
And that was really my goal all along – to show her how special handmade garments are. They’re made slowly, with love and care, they take time and need a little extra tenderness, but you can shape them exactly the way you imagine. They’re unique, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of just because they don’t have a brand label on them. She is so proud of this hat, and I’ll be honest, I cried a little because it means so much to her. One thing is for sure: she’s the only girl in our city with this exact hat, and that makes it even more special.
She’s been wearing it ever since - from the moment she gets up until she goes to bed. Seeing her so proud of something that came from my hands is the best feeling in the world. It reminded me why I love creating things like this in the first place.
For me, it’s never just about yarn and stitches. It’s about moments like this - about love, warmth, and the quiet kind of connection that always comes through handmade things, the kind that lasts long after the project is finished.
Coming Soon
I’ll be sharing the pattern for The Blushbow Beanie soon - right after the gauge swatch course here on Yarn Enchantment. It’s a fun, cozy project that’s perfect for gifting, or just for treating yourself. I also can make it into a knitted version because this is really a simple design.
Until then, I’d love to hear from you.
