January 8, 2025A Sweater Inspired by Diana Barry
Originally published on January 5, 2025
If you’ve ever read Anne of Green Gables, you’ll know that Diana Barry is the kind of friend we all dream of having. She’s loyal, kind, and effortlessly elegant, a perfect balance to Anne Shirley’s fiery imagination and dramatic flair. I believe when Melanie Rountree started designing this Anne of Green Gables-inspired sweater, she thought about the timeless charm Diana brings to the story. This puffed sleeve sweater is her little tribute to Diana’s enduring beauty.
The Feminine Elegance of the Diana Sweater
This sweater is all about femininity and elegance. The soft, red hue feels warm and inviting, and the puffed sleeves add just the right amount of drama (because let’s be honest, Anne would approve of a little drama, wouldn’t she?). The ribbed hem and long cuffs give this sweater such a unique look, making it a perfect addition to any handmade wardrobe.
Knitting the Diana Sweater: A Test Knit Experience
You can knit the Diana Sweater in various styles. For example, you can add a high neck and ruffles, like in the children’s version of the Diana Sweater , and create a matching outfit for moms and their girls. This makes it a great project for those who love creating timeless knitwear for the whole family. If you’re curious about the little version, you can read the full blog post here.
That’s one of the reasons I love Melanie’s designs so much, she adds so much uniqueness and always thinks of our little ones first.
Yarn Choices: Cool Wool Seta and Setasuri
I wanted to make myself a red sweater because this warm color is perfect for autumn knitting projects, and I think it’s the ideal hue for me. I held Cool Wool Seta and Setasuri from Lana Grossa double for this version. For the children’s version, I used Knitting for Olive mohair, but I wanted to try something different for the adult version. To be honest, I don’t think there’s much difference between the two brands, but in my personal opinion, I like Setasuri so much more. KFO mohair can itch a bit, while Setasuri feels really nice and cozy, almost like wearing a warm, fluffy cloud.
I also used this same yarn combination for my Robinson Wrap Cardigan , which is still a WIP - or is it a UFO by now? Tell me, when does a WIP officially become a UFO? Ahh, maybe I’ll finish it before the one-year mark, but I don’t feel very motivated to touch it right now.
Styling the Diana Sweater
Back to the Diana Sweater - isn’t it beautiful? Imagine wearing it over a dress to transition from cold winter days to spring or from hot summer days to autumn. This vintage - inspired knitwear piece is truly timeless, elegant, and will be a loyal garment in my wardrobe - just like Diana Barry.
Troubleshooting the Neckline
Because I left out the high neck, I had a little trouble with the neckline. It didn’t want to stay in place and kept slipping off my shoulders. That’s why I threaded in an elastic band. Now it’s secure, stays in place, and I don’t have to worry about losing it.
Final Thoughts
The Diana Sweater is truly beautiful and elegant, perfect for knitters who love a touch of vintage in their wardrobe. It’s a project that will bring joy and warmth to your life, just like Diana Barry herself.
Until next time, happy knitting!
