I knitted a square featuring a little squirrel. As I completed the square, I decided to sew on a pearl to serve as the squirrel's eye. If you want to add a pearl to your square as well, I recommend knitting it into the fabric. I used 4.5 mm beads; my smallest crochet hook is 1.5 mm, and it does not fit through the small hole in the middle of the bead. I found that using a wire or scrap yarn was the most effective method for securing it to the stitch. This technique not only allows a sturdier attachment but also is the pearl visible from both sides.
The size of the bead you choose to use as the squirrel's eye should depend on the yarn weight and needle size you're using for your square. If you opt for a larger square, make sure your bead is large enough to clearly represent the eye. When using a bigger size bead, attaching them with a crochet hook should be easy.
The squirrel square looks amazing on both sides, so the choice of which side to use is entirely up to you!
