My Test Knit Journey: Ginkgo Biloba Hat by Greenermakes
Have you ever knit a piece that just made your heart skip a beat? That’s how I felt when I volunteered as a test knitter for the Ginkgo Biloba Hat, a stunning, nature-inspired pattern designed by Marie of Greenermakes. This hat beautifully honors the ancient Ginkgo biloba tree, transforming its iconic fan-shaped leaves into wearable art with every stitch.
What Makes the Ginkgo Biloba Tree Unique?
Ginkgo biloba, also known as the maidenhair tree, has thrived for over 200 million years. Native to China and Japan, it’s revered for its resilience and distinctive, delicate leaves. These trees can soar up to 100 feet, and the female trees even produce yellow fruits with a subtle almond flavor. For centuries, Ginkgo biloba has played a role in traditional Chinese medicine, believed to boost memory, fight inflammation, and support cognitive health, plants truly are amazing allies for humans

Test Knitting the Ginkgo Biloba Hat
When I spotted the invitation for test knitters, I knew Marie’s pattern was something special. The hat is crafted with a folded double brim, extra warmth is always welcome when the cold sets in! For yarn, I reached for two strands of Knitting for Olive fingering weight in “Ice Blue,” and it was the perfect choice. The Ginkgo motif looks beautifully against the soft blue, and I love giving new purpose to yarn leftovers from past projects like my Diana sweater.
Marie’s clever design technique shines throughout. The brim features a “ginkgo leaf ribbing,” which is worked by knitting into the rows below. The pattern recommends a provisional cast-on and a tubular bind-off for a neat finish. After the brim, the hat transitions into relaxing stocking stitch, and simple decreases shape the crown. The hat knit up quickly, making this a super relaxing and fast project.
Why Test Knitting Matters
Test knitting is more than making a project, it’s about supporting designers and bringing clarity to their instructions for other knitters. Giving feedback on fit, finishing, and clarity is a way to contribute to the craft community and help ensure everyone’s knitting experience is smooth and joyful.
