Popsicle Tank: A Sweet Summer Knitting Project
December 30, 2023Wrapping Up in Warmth: The Vine Pullover Knitting Project
Originally published on December 28, 2023
When the days become shorter and a bit colder, there is nothing better than wrapping yourself in a beautiful and warm hand knit sweater. In this case, I wrapped my four-year-old daughter in a warm and cozy garment.
Falling in Love with the Vine Pullover
I saw the Vine Pullover, designed by Melanie Rountree, on Ravelry, and I instantly fell in love with it, the cable details on both sleeves looked so stunning!
I already had Drops Lima in the colorway Blue Indigo in my stash. The Nome hat, which was a previous project of mine, was full of cable details, and I knitted that with Lima as well, so I knew that this yarn would bring out the cable details beautifully.
Customizing the Fit for Winter Comfort
The winter in Austria can get pretty cold, so we always wear a few layers of clothing underneath the pullover. For that reason, I knitted this sweater in size 8 because I wanted to have 5 cm of positive ease.
For the underarm area, I picked up four extra stitches so that even with two layers underneath the garment, she has enough room to freely move and play in the sweater. I spoke with the designer about my alterations in the sleeve section, and she helped me to calculate the rows in between the decreases.
Finishing Touches with the Italian Bind-Off
The Italian Bind-off creates a seamless and elastic edge, so I worked it on both sleeves and the body ripping.
Adding a Personal Touch with Embroidery
This was the first time I worked an embroidery pattern on a knit garment. Embroidery is a remarkable craft, you can make your garments look so unique and special! I am a beginner when it comes to embroidery, so it was very difficult for me to find a pattern that was suitable for the yarn I chose, and it also had to be beginner-friendly.
After several hours of researching, I finally found a wonderful and free tutorial on YouTube. My son helped me to modify its text to Anna. For the letters, I worked the split stitch. For the embroidery, I used the colors Ocker, Olive, and White. Overall, it turned out stunning.
Matching Hat: The Williams Hat
I also wanted to make a matching hat for the Vine Pullover, so I decided to use the Williams hat, which is also a design from Melanie Rountree. It is such a joy to knit Melanie's patterns! She explains everything so detailed, and she provides plenty of videos which guide you through every section. And if there is still something unclear, you can always write to her and ask for help.
Final Thoughts: A Labor of Love
Knitting the Vine Pullover and Williams Hat was such a rewarding experience. From the intricate cable details to the personalized embroidery, every step of the process brought joy and satisfaction.
If you’re looking for a cozy and stylish knitting project for your little ones, I highly recommend trying out these patterns by Melanie Rountree. They’re beginner-friendly, well-supported, and result in truly beautiful garments.
Until next time, happy knitting!
