How to Fix a Dropped Stitch in Knitting (Stockinette Stitch)
July 7, 2025How to Knit the Perfect Brioche Stitch Edge for Neat and Tidy Edges
Originally published on July 4, 2025
I am really excited to share with you the Brioche Stitch Edge, a stunning self-finished border (sometimes referred to as a "selvedge"). Similar to the Picot Edge, this technique creates neat looking edges that are perfect for scarves, shawls, blankets, and more.
What makes the Brioche Stitch Edge truly special is its versatility - it works exceptionally well with increases and decreases. In my experience, this edge stitch pairs beautifully with textured or thicker stitch patterns like the Garter Stitch, Moss Stitch, Half Brioche, or the full Brioche Stitch. But I always say, try working this stitch with different gauges and see what works best for you.

What Is the Brioche Stitch Edge?
The Brioche Stitch Edge is a clever adaptation of the classic Brioche Stitch technique, specifically designed to create beautiful, functional edges in Brioche stitch patterns. If you’ve ever worked with Brioche before, you already know how amazing it feels - squishy, stretchy, and totally reversible. That’s because it’s made by alternating slipped stitches with yarn overs, creating this lush, ribbed texture that’s just as cozy as it is good-looking.
When used as an edge, it creates this clean, decorative border that’s not only practical but also seriously eye-catching. Unlike other edge techniques, the Brioche Stitch Edge has a more defined and thicker appearance, making it ideal for projects where you want the edges to stand out.
One thing to keep in mind: because this edge is on the thicker side, it’s not the best choice if you’re planning to pick up stitches from it later or sew it to another piece.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these simple steps to create your own Brioche Stitch Edge.
Step 1: Cast On Your Stitches
Start by casting on the required number of stitches for your project. Make sure to include an extra stitch at each side for you edge stitch.
Step 2: Set Up the First Row
- With the working yarn in front, slip the first stitch purlwise.
- Yarn over (YO) to create a wrap around the needle.
- Knit the next stitch or start working in your stitch pattern.
- Continue knitting in your stitch pattern until you reach the last stitch
- For the final stitch, knit it normally to complete the row.
Note: in the Set up row the last stitch will not have a yarn over.

Step 3: Work the Second Row
Turn your work and repeat the process on the wrong side:
- With the working yarn in front, slip the first stitch purlwise.
- Yarn over (YO) to create a wrap around the needle.
- Continue knitting in your stitch pattern until you reach the last stitch
- For the final stitch, knit it together with the yarn over

Step 4: Repeat the Pattern
Keep repeating these two steps to create a neat and tidy edge stitch.
💡 Pro Tip:
To keep your edges neat, always ensure your yarn overs are snug but not too tight, and be careful to not create a double stitch accidentally.

Creative Ways to Use the Brioche Stitch Edge
The Brioche Stitch Edge is incredibly versatile. Here are some ideas for incorporating it into your projects:
- Scarves and Shawls: Add a beautiful border to scarves or cozy shawls.
- Blankets and Throws: Use it as a decorative edge for baby blankets or lap throws.
Why the Brioche Stitch Edge is a Must-Try for Your Knitting Projects
The Brioche Stitch Edge is an absolute game-changer for us knitters who want to incorporate a neat finish directly. Not only does it look stunning, but it’s also really easy to learn, perfect for both beginners and seasoned knitters alike. This versatile edge stitch works beautifully wherever you want your edges to stay open and relaxed, making it ideal for scarves, shawls, and more.
If you’ve ever used an I-cord edge but weren’t completely sold on it, this stitch makes a fantastic alternative. For example, patterns like the Sophie Scarf or Shawl can be elevated with the Brioche Stitch Edge instead of an I-cord - it adds a softer, more textured finish while still keeping those edges crisp and professional-looking.
