Why Add Beads to Your Knitting?
Knitting with beads adds a touch of elegance to your projects, whether you’re creating intricate lace shawls, cozy accessories, or stylish garments. Beads enhance the texture and appearance of your knitted fabric, creating stunning visual effects and adding a subtle sparkle or shimmer.
With endless possibilities for customization—beads come in various sizes, shapes, colors, and materials—you can tailor your projects to suit your style. From delicate seed beads to larger glass or crystal beads, the right choice can elevate your designs and give them a unique personality.
Techniques for Adding Beads to Your Knitting
There are several techniques for incorporating beads into your knitting, each offering unique advantages and design possibilities. Let’s explore three popular methods step-by-step:
Step-by-Step Instruction:
1. Threading Beads onto Stitches Using a Wire or Dental Floss
This method ensures that your beads are visible from both sides of the fabric, making it ideal for reversible projects.
- Materials Needed: Beads and a thin wire or dental floss that fits through the bead holes.
- Steps:
- Thread one side of the wire through the knitting stitch.
- Pull the stitch off the needle—it should now lie within the loop of the wire.
- Add the bead to the wire, ensuring it threads through both sides of the wire.
- Pull the bead down onto the knitting stitch.
- Slip the stitch with the bead back onto your left knitting needle.
- Knit or purl the stitch as usual.

2. Adding Beads Using a Crochet Hook
This technique also ensures visibility from both sides and is perfect for placing beads precisely where you want them.
- Materials Needed : Beads and a crochet hook small enough to fit through the bead holes.
- Steps :
- Place the bead onto the crochet hook.
- Insert the hook into the next knit stitch and remove it from the left needle.
- Pull the knit stitch through the bead.
- Slip the stitch back onto your left knitting needle.
- Knit or purl the stitch as usual.

3. Pre-Threading Beads onto Yarn Before Knitting
This method is best suited for projects where beads only need to be visible from one side.
- Materials Needed : Beads, sewing thread, and a needle (or wire for larger beads).
- Steps :
- Thread your sewing thread and create a loop.
- Thread your yarn through the loop.
- Start threading beads onto the yarn by pulling them through the sewing thread.
- Continue until you’ve added as many beads as needed.
- When knitting, slide a bead up to the needle, leaving a small space between the bead and the stitch.
- Knit the stitch and adjust the bead so it lies on the front of your work.
(Note: Beads threaded this way won’t be visible from the wrong side of the fabric.)

Tips for Choosing the Right Beads
When selecting beads for your knitting project, consider the following:
- Size : Ensure the beads are proportionate to your yarn weight. Too large, and they may overwhelm the fabric; too small, and they might not show up well.
- Material : Glass or crystal beads add shine, while wooden or metal beads offer a rustic look.
- Color : Choose beads that complement or contrast with your yarn to enhance the overall design.

Give Beaded Knitting a Try!
Knitting with beads isn’t as challenging as it may seem, and it’s a wonderful way to add sparkle, texture, and personality to your projects. Whether you’re embellishing a shawl, scarf, or garment, beads can transform your creations into works of art.
So why not give it a try? With a little practice, you’ll be adding beads like a pro and creating stunning, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Until then, happy knitting!
