I Love Stripes Bandana: A Perfect Summer Knit
January 1, 2024The Health Benefits of Knitting
Originally published on January 1, 2024
In this blog post, I wanted to share with you a few benefits that knitting and crocheting can offer you for your mental and physical health.
In our world that is dominated by technology, constant connectivity and stress, the ancient art of knitting, which is often being thought about as a grandmother's hobby in cozy winter evenings, has surprisingly many and various positive aspects that go far beyong creating warm and stylish garments. So let's look at some!
1. Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Knitting involves repetitive hand movements. These repetitive movements engage the parasympathic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation, and the focus that is required for the task at hand further distracts from stressors. This stress reduction ultimately has a positive impact on your mental health.
2. Mindfulness and Meditation
As already mentioned before, while engaging in the process of knitting or chrocheting, the focus that is required for their work distracts the crafters from negative thoughts. This does not only reduce stress, but it also creates a sense of inner peace, so knitting can also be thought of as a form of meditation that helps sharpening the mind.
3. Enhancing Fine Motor Skills and Hand-Eye Coordination
Knitting and crocheting both require precise movements and a lot of practice to execute those properly. So, these crafts will over time improve your fine motor skills as well as your hand-eye coordination. This can be particularly useful for individuals with certain conditions such as arthritis or Parkinson's disease, as it improves their ability to do every day tasks.
4. Reducing Pain and Increasing Mindfulness
The repetitive movements involved in knitting can not only distract from stress and negative thoughts, but also from chronical pain and temporarily relieve those who have to endure it as well as improve their concentration and provide a sense of well-being.
5. Fostering Social Connection
Knitting circles and online communities such as Ravelry or Instagram provide opportunities for social interaction, combating loneliness and isolation. But there are also so many beautiful yarn and knitting festivals around the world if you ever want to take things offline. I have been to a few, and there is nothing quite like being surrounded by hundreds of people who all get excited about a new skein of hand dyed wool. And if a big festival feels like too much, you can always try a knitting group at your local café. Just sitting with people, sharing patterns, techniques, and progress, it fosters a sense of belonging and shared passion that enriches your social life and overall well being.
6. Promoting Creativity and Self-Expression
The best part of knitting, for me, is picking out the yarn. I can spend forever in a shop just touching everything, the chunky wools, the soft merino, that one skein of hand dyed silk that costs way too much but I buy anyway. And then I get to decide what it becomes. A scarf, a blanket, a tiny hat for a baby who is not even born yet. There are so many colors and textures that it never gets boring. Even if I follow a pattern exactly, the yarn I choose makes it mine. Seeing it all come together, that is the best feeling.
Why Knitting Is More Than Just a Hobby
Honestly, knitting has become my little anchor in this wild, chaotic life. It is not just about making something pretty, though that helps. It is the way it slows everything down for a while. The world keeps expecting more and more from us, but when I sit down with my needles, I do not have to meet anyone's expectations. I just do my own thing, one stitch at a time. Whether you have been knitting for years or you are just picking up a pair of needles for the first time, I hope you give yourself the chance to feel that calm. It is not about being perfect. It is about finding a moment that feels like yours.
I'm pretty sure that I didn't mention all the benefits there are, but if you know more benefits, please let me know in the comment section.
