When Crafting Becomes a Lifeline
Did you ever think of a handcrafted garment as your best friend? To be honest, I have. Back in 2020, I made myself a stunning and beautiful crochet shawl. Not only was it the first significant garment I accomplished, but it also became a big and cozy companion that kept me warm on cold days. It also provided me with a lot of comfort when the pandemic hit and our lives changed forever.

Due to my husband's immune suppression, we have to be extremely careful not to get sick. Living in a small town where people can be quite judgmental when they see you wearing a mask adds another layer of challenge. They don't understand that my husband's life is at risk if he contracts even a mild virus.
I remember one incident vividly. I was in a supermarket, and a man stared at me and laughed as he deliberately coughed in my face because I was wearing a mask. Furthermore, I couldn't comprehend why people can be so cruel. I am not harming them by wearing a mask, but their actions could potentially harm or even kill my husband.
It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of compassion and understanding. We never truly know what battles others are facing, and a little kindness can go a long way in making someone's day a little brighter.

The Birth of the “Durable Friendship” Shawl
Now, enough with complaints for today; let's delve into the topic of the shawl. I crafted the “Durable Friendship” shawl using nine balls of Drops Merino Extra Fine yarn. Initially, I had another project in mind for this yarn, but as often happens, my plans took a different turn. Have you ever experienced a similar situation?
This pattern is from Wilma Westenberg, who offers an array of stunning crochet garments on her blog. I highly recommend checking it out!
Overall, this was a really easy and soothing project where you don't have to think too much. I crafted this in the evening while my little princess was sleeping, with an audiobook playing in the background. It was a precious moment of relaxation and creativity, adding an extra layer of joy to the process. Every time I'm wearing this shawl, I'm flooded with warm and positive memories, reminding me of those peaceful moments spent crafting with my loved ones nearby.
