Why Handmade Gifts Are Special
There’s nothing better than a handmade present for Christmas! I absolutely love receiving handcrafted gifts because they carry so much time, effort, and thoughtfulness. Each stitch in a knitted item tells a story of care and consideration.
But let’s be honest - not everyone appreciates handmade knitwear. I once had someone tell me they didn’t want their kids wearing something so “old-fashioned.” Yet, they’re perfectly fine buying knitwear from stores? It’s ironic how some people overlook the beauty and uniqueness of handmade items.
Luckily, my family couldn’t be more different. My kids and husband adore everything I make for them. They’re genuinely proud of my creations and love telling others that I’m the one who knitted them.
Teaching the True Meaning of Christmas Through Handmade Gifts
Every year, I knit something special for my kids and husband as a Christmas present. For me, it’s not just about the gift itself - it’s about teaching my kids the true meaning of Christmas. It’s about cherishing the moments we share, being grateful for one another, and celebrating the fact that we’re all still here.
This year, I made my son a stunning colorwork hat - the Lillesand Hat , designed by DROPS Design.
The Lillesand Hat: A Thoughtful Gift for My Son
For this project, I used DROPS Merino Extra Fine yarn in the colors Dark Grey and Light Grey . I absolutely love this yarn - it’s smooth, soft, and not itchy at all. Plus, DROPS offers such a wide variety of colors, making it easy to find the perfect combination for any project.
Here are the details of my knitting process:
- Head Circumference: 55/56 cm
- Needle Sizes:
- 3.00 mm for the brim
- 3.5 mm for the rest of the hat
- Yarn Usage: One skein of each color
Mistakes Happen - And That’s Okay!
Let’s talk about mistakes - they happen to the best of us. While working on the colorwork section of the hat, I accidentally miscounted a row. I was so distracted watching the Die Hard movie collection that I almost messed up the entire pattern.
Fortunately, the mistake wasn’t very noticeable, so there was no need to redo the hat. Sometimes imperfections add character to handmade items, and my son loves his hat just the way it is.
For the decreases, I followed the instructions from the Williams Hat pattern. This technique ensures a polished finish, bringing everything together beautifully.
The Joy of Seeing Your Loved Ones Wear Your Creations
My son was over the moon when he received his hat. He wears it every day, and seeing him enjoy it makes all the effort worthwhile. Handmade gifts like this aren’t just about the final product - they’re about creating memories and showing love in a tangible way.
Final Thoughts: The Magic of Handmade Christmas Gifts
Handmade Christmas gifts are more than just presents - they’re a labor of love. Whether it’s a cozy hat, scarf, or mittens, these items carry warmth love and meaning that store-bought gifts simply can’t replicate.
